Manager of Our Marriage

We’re asking You, Lord, to be a partner in our marriage;
We’re asking You, Lord, to be the one whose will comes first.
We’re asking You, Lord, to be the truth and the way
And to lead us in Your light.
We’re asking You, Lord, to be the partner in control.

Be the manager of our marriage, Lord;
Be the master of our home.
Be director of our daily walk,
For we depend on you alone.

We’re asking You, Lord, to be the
One who blends our separate styles;
We’re asking You, Lord, to be the guardian of our hearts.
We’re asking You, Lord, to be the reason for
Each decision that we make.
We’re asking You, Lord, to be the partner in control.

Be the manager of our marriage, Lord;
Be the master of our home.
Be director of our daily walk,
For we depend on you alone.

We’re asking You, Lord, to be the trustee of what we call ours;
We’re asking You, Lord, to be the keeper of our time.
We’re asking You, Lord, to instill in us
Dreams and values that will last.
We’re asking You, Lord, to be the partner in control.

Be the manager of our marriage, Lord;
Be the master of our home.
Be director of our daily walk,
For we depend on you alone.

About this song:
When Kathleen and I decided to get married back in 2003, we needed special music. I’d written a wedding song for my first marriage, but we couldn’t very well use that for ours. So I wrote this one.

I recorded it with guitar and synthesized horns and percussion and made a CD to sing by at our wedding. We used it at both weddings.

Both, you say? Yep, we married at the Prayer Service at church on Wednesday night, November 5, 2003. It was a very informal ceremony. In fact, we wore jeans and t-shirts. But then we went to Blytheville, Arkansas, for Thanksgiving and had a dressier church wedding with Kathleen’s parents and brothers, her girls, and my daughter in attendance. We sang our song again there.

The song you’ll hear at my website (go to the Read/Listen tab at RogerBruner.com) is my original recording with Kathleen and me singing together. Very nice, if we do say so ourselves.

We had a very strong feeling of wanting God to be at the center of our marriage. We wanted God to be our partner, yet we wanted Him to be more than that. We wanted Him to be our “senior partner”–our “manager.”

You may find a free lead sheet of “Manager of Our Marriage” on my website.

I have another blog. Check out “On Aging Gracelessly” if you’re interested.

Looking forward to bringing you another set of lyrics next Wednesday.

  1. I like! God is the reason my wife and I met. I am forever thankful to be sharing this journey with her as he leads us on this road called life. ~LF6 Comment Trail
